Instead of lounging in a cabana for a week in Mexico, Lena Secord, Chief Human Resources Officer, spent her recent trip down south enriching children’s lives in an impoverished community.
Secord, along with four of her friends, volunteered with a children’s centre, the Refuge of Hope, in Bucerías, a Mexican town 40 minutes north of the tourist hot spot, Puerto Vallarta. The Refuge of Hope was established to empower vulnerable women and children of Bucerías, to live in physical, emotional and spiritual safety.
Childcare is not a feasible option for many single mothers in that area. The Refuge of Hope is a place for children between the ages of three- and 13-years-old to go during the day where they can be taken care of and are provided with basic education while their mothers are away at work.
For her part, Secord, with the assistance of Dawson Group’s IT department, brought down four decommissioned laptops as a donation from Dawson Group so the children and their mothers can learn basic typing and computer skills. She also brought down a suitcase of clothing, toys and art supplies for the children, and spent the week with the program, volunteering with her friends.
Secord returned from her trip feeling rejuvenated and with a new perspective on things we might take for granted back home in Canada.
