The Dawson Group Cyclepaths did more than their part to look after Mother Earth last week during the annual GoByBike Week in B.C. Our team of 18 riders cruised past previous records for distance travelled, calories burned and greenhouse gases saved over the week-long campaign that rode from June 3 – 9.
Employees from our different companies and corners of our province – new to the team or veteran riders – teamed up to ride 721-kilometres, nearly the distance from our Dawson Road Maintenance (DRM) yard in Clinton, to our yard in Smithers! With 66 rides, we also burned 21,639 calories and saved 156-kilograms of greenhouse gases!
Many of the riders captured the spirit of GoByBike Week, as they traded in four wheels for two and rode their bikes to places they normally drive.
Neil Nethercote, an Inside Parts Person from our Dawson International Truck Centres (DITC) location in Kelowna couldn’t ride his bike to work due to time constraints, but pulled out his bike for his daily trip to Tim Hortons. He is also looking forward to the opening of our new location on 3953 Highway 97 North, as it will be closer to home and allow him to ride into work more often, weather permitting.
In Williams Lake, DRM Quality Manager Shea De La Mare was excited to get involved with GoByBike Week after a few years away from the program.
“Bike riding used to be my passion when I lived in L.A., but fell out of the habit when I moved back to B.C. I saw the post on the Intranet about GoByBike Week and decided to start riding into work and around town once again,” said de la Mare, who even battled a minor hailstorm on a commute home one day last week.
Greg Anderson (Inside Parts Person) with our DITC Kelowna location was the top rider, who travelled 175 km and personally saved producing 38 kg of greenhouse gases.
Many of the riders are looking forward to a great summer of riding around B.C.!
