Dawson Group takes pride in finding new opportunities to grow as an inclusive, diverse and welcoming company.
A few months ago, our Human Resources department attended a conference career fair that focused on identifying and removing barriers in the recruitment and employment process. One of the presenters that caught Dawson’s eye was Smart Options, a government-funded, locally owned company that builds inclusive and diverse workplaces through employment and recruitment services.
“The support Racheal and her team at Smart Options offer both their clients and employers really stood out to me. Through further conversation, we began recruiting through Smart Options,” said Reanna Bendzak, Dawson Group’s Recruitment Advisor.
Smart Options also did a full presentation for Dawson, where they discussed the importance of diversity and inclusive hiring, and how it can be beneficial for businesses. Afterwards, Smart Options submitted a resume to Dawson Group on behalf of one of their clients for an opportunity with Dawson International Truck Centres’ service team.
“We often hear about companies that value diversity, but don’t practice full inclusion within their company and that’s where Smart Options services come into play for both the employer and job seeker,” said Racheal McLeod, Employment Counsellor with Smart Options.
Two interviews later, the Truck Centres had a brand-new shop helper, Ionela Garrett.
“I love working with Dawson. They treat me well and they are one big family for me,” said Garrett.
McLeod and Smart Options assisted Garrett through the onboarding process, completing the safety training, one-on-one support through job coaching and stays in regular contact with Truck Centres’ management about their progress.
“Everything has been going well so far. Ionela brings great energy into work, is working with one of our fourth-year apprentices and is getting settled quite nicely,” said Dave Dennie, the Manager of Service at the Kamloops Dawson International Truck Centres. “This is a great experience for Ionela and for our staff, learning to work with employees with diverse abilities. I can see the confidence and independence growing and look forward to the future with this employee.”
As Garrett grows more comfortable in the role, McLeod will work with Dawson to see if and how it is possible to provide her with more opportunities within the company.
