Winter and bikes may not seem to go hand in hand, but even Arctic cold won’t stop some cyclists.
Craig Stishenko, a member of the Parts team at Dawson International Truck Centres in Kelowna, participated in the Winter Go By Bike event, which was held on February 12. With temperatures dropping to -10C, Craig still logged 12 kilometres to show his support for the initiative.
Craig is an avid cyclist, who averages more than 1,000 kilometres per year. This is the fifth bike-to-work event he has participated in.
“My wife and I took on the mindset in early 2020 that with a little pre-planning, a car is not always necessary, and we reduced our household to one vehicle,” Craig said.
“We are advocates for the benefits of riding to work and participating in this event is a great conversation starter. For us biking to work means reduced parking congestion and vehicle costs. It is also good exercise, and the fresh air provides a natural energy boost and helps clear the mind.
“I am looking forward to the warmer weather and getting back to riding to work every day.”
Craig and teammates Rhonda Bampton and Ernesto Discaya also participated in a weeklong bike-to-work event last fall. The team logged 113 kilometres from September 28 to October 4, winning a prize for their efforts.
